UOM PRESS SEMINAR - DR KLIMIS MASTORIDIS
The first out of a series of seminars on typography being held at the University of Macedonia, took place on the 14th of October 2006.

The seminar kicked off at 11 in the morning with an impressive duration of seven and a half hours. Klimis Mastoridis started with an analysis of verbal and visual information while stressing the interpretive role of the designer of verbal information to graphic media.
He then moved on to comment on the tools used by a typographic designer focusing on typeface selection and use, thus establishing the importance of good typographic design along with the study of the history of typography. Academic education, museums, exhibitions and research centres were noted as being of the utmost importance, together with further bibliography and articles concerning typography and greek typography in particular.
After a short brake, delegates were presented with almost the entire history of typography, manifoldly accompanied with slides as well as hands on material, from rare books to types, punches and type specimens, amongst others. Klimis Mastoridis moved on to focus on the history of greek typography, whilst taking questions and discussing with delegates during the talk. Gerry Leonidas of Reading University, shared some of his comments with attendants as well, especially when the topic had reached contemporary technologies and type designs.

The seminar was organised by University of Macedonia Press as part of a series of lectures and workshops due to the third upcoming International Conference on Typography and Visual Communication and was attended by roughly 35 people.
